Oh man, how fondly I remember this day in Hünfeld as a wedding photographer! Mary and Tobi are really great people, which I was documenting as a photographer together with „Trautante“ at their marriage. And this day was really special all around. Especially relaxed, especially emotional… and especially hot 😀
That’s why I brought you today to the photos of the wedding of Mary and Tobi also my favorite tips against scorching heat at the wedding. Because not only me as a wedding photographer, who constantly runs from A to B, it gets discreetly hot when the thermometer climbs above 30 ° at a summer wedding.
Clothes for summer wedding
Oh, wedding dresses and also especially the groom’s suit can get really uncomfortably hot at a summer wedding. The hot tip from me as a wedding photographer: functional underwear! That sounds strange at first, after all, you put on one more layer. However, the functional underwear can absorb sweat and thus reduces sweat stains. And not only on the wedding photos. Exciting: There are even cooling underwear or underwear with integrated cooling batteries. The following always applies: A spare shirt for the groom in the freezer can’t hurt at all. Important: Wedding etiquette dictates that invitees may not open or remove their jackets until the groom does. So: please take off your clothes quickly 😉.
And for the people with a dress on the big day, heat is not a big deal at all if you choose a light, summer dress from the beginning and still have a spare ready. Before the first dance to slip into a light summer dress in which you have the perfect freedom of movement, I can only recommend as a wedding photographer. Because whether Hünfelden, Munich or Singapore: the next summers will probably be hotter rather than cooler 😉.
Hair and make-up with wedding photographer in Hünfeld
It’s not my specialty, but I was there quite often at the bride’s getting ready and picked up quite a bit. Stylists are really worth their price in the summer. Because they know how to make makeup last longer even with sunscreen as a base, which hairstyle is cooler than the other, and how to curl hair without using a hair dryer or straightener, and how to put hair up. Because that’s always a good idea in the summer, I’ve been told. Because as soon as the back of your neck gets warm, your whole body warms up more. Or you do it like Mary and Tobi and let yourselves drive with the convertible through the area with the open hair. Then it is also guaranteed not too hot 😉

Sure, we all know the candy bar by now. As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen countless of them (and eaten my way through 😉). In the summer, however, most candies are not a good idea. They fall apart too quickly, stick together, or just get gross. So it’s much better if you replace the candy bar or sweet table in summer with a cooling station before, during and after the wedding ceremony!
A few hot tips on what might be found in the cooling station, from me as a wedding photographer: refreshing wipes, those fun little leaves for powdering, sunscreen (!), mosquito repellent for the evening, fans and umbrellas or hats, water spray or water bottles half-filled with water and then ice. They keep drinks cold for a particularly long time or work super as cold packs for the neck. Sunglasses are also often forgotten. That you think of cold drinks even before the wedding ceremony starts without saying, right? Ice cubes with flowers or fruit juice are especially decorative and chilled fruit cools from the inside. Perfect for you as a wedding couple, for your favorite people and for me as a wedding photographer!
Because: Cooling stations can of course also look especially beautiful, of course! But don’t worry, if I’m getting married on a meadow, the tractor with the bulging shovel, which contains drinks, umbrellas and crazy amounts of ice, will do just as well. PS: Always first the drinks in the trolley or tractor shovel, the ice ALWAYS on top. Because we all know: cold seeps down 😉
Emotional wedding ceremony with wedding photographer in Hünfeld
I have had so many weddings together with the Friederike, that I have often been able to observe her extraordinary ideas. This does not end with the ideas for the wedding ceremony design. Many of the tips against heat at a wedding I heard or saw the first time from her and at her weddings. There were already water bomb fights, water spray guns and ice for all people during the wedding ceremony. I think it’s great that you can have so much action in ceremonies, that’s no secret.
If you like to have it a little more inconspicuous and are not action people, Friederike also has a very special tip in store. She swears by paddling pools for the little ones and footbaths for the big ones at hot summer weddings and ceremonies above 30°. They can look really nice with beautiful zinc tubs or ceramic bowls, be decorated with colorful flowers and be provided with small towels matching the wedding color. And really provide a clearer head during the ceremony.
The whole body heats up much less when the feet are constantly felt. And – well – straight the feet are nevertheless glad about each rest on hot summer days. Regardless of whether they are finally allowed out of their socks, or whether they are released from the high shoes 😉 Yes, it may sound unconventional. But hey, against heat at the wedding, footbaths and wading pools are really a good idea if you want to enjoy your wedding ceremony unadulterated.
Tips for a wedding in June, July or August
Please also pay attention to shadows during the ceremony for you as a wedding couple and for your loved ones. Because yes, as a wedding photographer I don’t have any problems at all with working with hard shadows and thereby achieving special effects, but for the people present it is clearly more pleasant if they sit in the shade during the wedding. But please: Make sure that umbrellas have no advertising and are ideally white! All other colors will ruin the skin tones in your wedding photos! Be sure to have large wedding venue umbrellas shown to you before the wedding and avoid brewery umbrellas and bright colors at all costs. You’ll be doing me as your wedding photographer a huge favor!
By the way, indoor weddings are sometimes the best idea even in the heat. Air conditioning and shade are sometimes the one thing everyone at weddings craves most on hot days. There’s a cool wine cellar or a nice air-conditioned room in your wedding venue: do it!
And again, very emphatic from me as a wedding photographer: please think of lots of non-alcoholic drinks! In return, you can usually cut down a little on the food, because many people have less appetite in the heat. Make sure food is not in the sun and do yourself and your favorite people a favor and choose light food. How about a barbecue buffet? The one at Mary and Tobi’s “Zum Goldenen Stern” in Hünfeld was really excellently tasty! And if you love flowers and are using them at the wedding or are expecting flower gifts: make sure that your flowers are also in season, cooled and watered (this apparently works with small water tubes or sponges, but florists are really good contacts there) and set up a few buckets for bouquets that could be given to you.
Alternative recommendations from the wedding photographer
By the way, a good alternative is also a wedding that is moved forward to a brunch, where the wedding couple then perhaps says goodbye directly at noon into the honeymoon or also a ceremony in the evening!
With Mary and Tobi, Friederike aka the „Trautante“ and I disappeared with the wedding couple again to the location of the ceremony and have celebrated there a small intimate wedding, which was really only for the wedding couple. A specialty of the Friederike. And in addition, the perfect light for me as a wedding photographer in the sunset and the very big feelings. If you are getting married together with Friederike and me, we will gladly build in this extra ceremony for you instead of an evening photo shoot. Such a wonderful moment, really. But of course, you can also just add the wedding ceremony to the evening. But then please remember to wear mosquito repellent, especially near water.
And then: Enjoy! Because there is hardly a more beautiful moment for a ceremony!
